Start Fresh, Start New: Knowing the Shelf Life of Your Makeup

by Elegance Makeup: Looks By Uhuru

MakeupHow many times have you struggled with tossing your absolute favorite color lip gloss or put off buying another expensive bottle of that miracle working liquid foundation you’ve kept locked away in your makeup stash? As much as it is like a complete waste to trash them, believe it or not, your makeup has a natural ‘shelf life.’ Any makeup applied to the skin can cause breakouts or other skin problems if it is held on to for too long. So, it’s time to start fresh, start new & simplify your makeup!!!

CLEANSERS & MOISTURIZERS:    1 year

Shelf Life Expiration Hints:    Separating Ingredients | Thinning

Healthy Tips:    Products such as facial cleansers & moisturizers have natural products in

them that naturally can go bad if kept too long. Some can become acidic &

cause unwanted skin reactions if not replaced in a timely manner.

CONCEALERS:    1 year

Shelf Life Expiration Hints: Thickening or Thinning texture | Separating Ingredients

Healthy Tips: Do not store in heated environments, but that of a normal to cool room

temperature.

FOUNDATION: 3-6 months

Shelf Life Expiration Hints: Thickening or Thinning texture | Separating Ingredients

Healthy Tips: Depending on whether your foundation is stick, oil-based or water-based,

foundations can begin to separate their ingredients. Do not store in heated environments, but that of a normal to cool room temperature.

POWDERS: 1 year (includes powders, blush, bronzer & eye shadows)

Shelf Life Expiration Hints: Drying | Breaking or Crumbling | Soften

Healthy Tips: Storing cosmetics in damp & moist environments is most often the means

by which cause the composition of cosmetic powders to change or go bad. Store powdered cosmetics (& all cosmetics) in low humidity environments.

EYE & LIP PENCILS: 1 year

Shelf Life Expiration Hints: Drying | Breaking Apart or Crumbling

Healthy Tips: Any makeup you use that is worn around the eyes is an easy holding ground

for bacteria &, if not tended to properly, can lead to eye infection. Sharpen at least weekly or before every use to prevent bacteria build up, as

well as risk of bacterial transfer to your eye.

MASCARA: 3-6 months

Shelf Life Expiration Hints: Dryness | Excessive Gathering

Healthy Tips: To limit the risk of bacteria growth, try to void rapidly pumping the wand

brush in & out of the tube because the forced air traps bacteria inside. Instead, try gathering mascara in a circular motion within the tube before applying.

LIP GLOSS & LIPSTICK: 1 year

Shelf Life Expiration Hints: Odor | Visible Moisture

Healthy Tips:    To reduce bacteria growth, store in low humidity environments.

Remember to always check your makeup as described above to prevent potential skin problems later.
